Pensioner housing

Breaking the Ruapehu District into separate areas for the purposes of subsidising pensioner housing was an option put forward for discus-

sion at last week's Waimarino Community Board meeting. Mayor Garrick Workman said it may be an option if the Waimarino

wanted to subsidise its own pensioner housing. He said the council was looking at separate subsidy system for the T aumarunui sewerage scheme and that it could be possible to allow separate subsidising of pensioner housing, if that was what the board wanted. Board member John Compton said the general feeling he had got from people was that they liked having old people stay in this community and would be happy to subsidise their rents. Cr Bill Peach said if such a scheme were implemented there would have to be a special fund set up so the money did not get lost in the general fund. Cr Ellen Gould, supported by Bruce Thompson said they had to consider that there were pensioners living in their own homes who were struggling to pay their present rates. Was it fair to burden them with paying a subsidy for other pensioners, they asked.
