Ruapehu Scouts & Cubs report

The Ruapehu Scouts and Cubs Committee held their AGM recently and the following officers were elected; Chairman - Mike Fetzer, Secretary - Jill Smith, Treasurer - Bob Evans, Committee - all parents. In his Scout Report Leader Grant Hays said there were 18 Scouts (14 boys and 4 girls) with two Assistant leaders. During the past year the Scouts have completed a first aid course including an evening at the Fire 1 Station treating mock car accident victims, t leaving a smoke filled room and resuscitation. With the cubs they mmr ,b jh

attended the Waiouru Dawn Anzac Service and then the Ohakune service. They collected eucalyptus seeds, chopped firewood, collected for the Arthritis appeal, delivered phone books, attended the Manawatu Gang Show and went camping over Easter. For an "Entertainment Patrol Challenge" the Scouts were instructed in all aspects of table etiquette, waiting, etc. They then cooked and served a five course dinner for parents and invited guests. For the second part of this challenge they put on an end

of year concert for parents. Three senior Scouts, Warwick Hays, Avenish Sharma and Malcolm Chan, have attained their Chief Scout Award. In his Cubs report leader Warren Swain said he has 16 Cubs with two girls and five boys waiting to be invested. Dean Smith has applied to become an assistant cub leader. The Cubs helped collect for the Crippled Children, learned bone carving, gained swimming and athletic badges, helped clean out under a woolshed and attended one camp which included an eeling expedi-

tion - a first for many of the Cubs. They also put on an end of year entertainment for their parents. Most of the fund raising the Scouts and Cubs do goes towards the running of the troop but they are now trying to get extra funds to go towards getting sufficient camping equipment. Over the past few years they have camped with "borrowed"tents, etc but are now wanting to build up their own equipment. The Scouts and Cubs will try most ways to raise hinds.
