Firemen's fish first!
Potentially the most land-lubberish volunteer fire brigade in New Zealand sent a team of deep-sea fishermen to the Russell Volunteer Fire Brigade National Fishing Tournament, and won. The Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade team of Martin Webb, Allan Murdie, Ben Goddard and Bruce Thompson took the prize for the heaviest bill fish, after landing a striped marlin weighing 124.8 kilograms. The fish was the heaviest ever caught in the annual Bay of Islands competition, run this year on 12 & 13 April. Angler Marty Webb took an hour and a half
to land the fish from the launch 'Kerevelle', and won a rod and reel for his troubles while the team won a cup and a bottle of rum as well as hats
and jackets each. The anglers said there was only some truth in the rumour that they used a carrot on a hook as a lure?
