Gun club caters for many
Waiouru's gun club is really a group of clubs, all catering for different styles of weapons use. A large section of the club is devoted to pistol shooting which itself caters for different styles of shooting including: paper target shooting (UIT); speed shooting were targets are steel plates 5-40 metres distant with seven courses of five targets - shooters need to be fast and accurate; action shooting (International Practical Shooting Confederation - IPSC) which involves
practical scenarios engaging steel plate and paper targets. The pistol shooters meet each Sunday from Darts Ohakune Darts Club report from Wednesday 17 April; there were more people at darls which was good to see, including the odd newcomer. David Mcllroy had the highest start of 108 and highest score of 140. Hugh Geraghty had the highest finish of 94. The overall winner was David Mcllroy followed by Colin Cranston. Ruapehu Motors donated two 'Scud Missiles for the booby prize which Kevin Mcllroy and Jacqui Bishop received. Kevin Mcllroy held up a game for 15 minutes talking to Ray Spry, no doubt about pointers (stags) for his punishment Jacqui Bishop beat him in their game.
10am and anyone interested in joining needs to use the club pistol under supervision for six months and has to attend 12 club shoots before they can apply for a B Category endorsement to their firearms licence which means they can then apply for a permit to purchase a pistol. Advice is available on all styles of shooting and types of firearms for each, from experts including the current New Zealand champion speed shooter who is a member of the Waiouru club. Advice is also available on reloading ammunition. The trap shooters' club meets every second Sunday and there is also a black powder section where participants shoot over various ranges with different muzzle-loading firearm replicas. Information of the club's activities, including on the up-coming pre-season duckshooters' trap shoot on 21 April, can be had from the club president Merv Beech at the Army Museum or the secretary Larry Meredith at the Ohakune Police Station.
