Talks for growers & officials

Last Thursday the New Zealand Employment Service held a meeting for local vegetable growers at the Ohakune Hotel. Conducted as an open forum, the meeting included speakers from the Department of Inland Revenue, New Zealand Immigration Service,

Department of Social Welfare, and New Zealand Employment Service. Employment Advisor Jan Lawton said the meeting was designed to make growers aware of current govemment initiative and legislation, as well as revealing the "Human Side" of govemment departments.

Speakers faced some tricky questions at times especially with regard to tax and immigrant labour. Mrs. Lawton said she hopes to encourage more use of the Employment Service in particular and to support this she will be opening the Ohakune office in the Information Centre three days per week dur-

ing the Winter season. Chairman of the Growers Association Alwyn Greenwood said that the meeting had been of benefit to all those who attended, both being an enjoyable evening out and a rare chance to ask frank and open questions of govemment department officers.
