Meatworks decision in 3 weeks
The decision as to whether Raetihi will have a new industry will have to wait for another three weeks. A hearing to consider the submissions, objections and cross objections to establishing a meat processing plant on the corner of George Street and SH4 has been set down for 11.00am on Friday 12 April. The venue for this hearing is yet to be determined but Ruapehu District Council's mayor Garrick Workman will
be pressing for it to be heard locally rather than in Taumarunui. Only one objection (from Transit NZ) and one cross objection (from AFFCO) remain after earlier objections and cross objections to establishing a meatworks on this piece of land (the former Timmos Timber yard) were withdrawn when the closing date for submissions passed on 19 March. Transit NZ's objection was based on concerns to protect the safety and
efficiency of the highway system - in this instance being State Highway 4. Their objection reads: "Transit NZ objects to the proposed change 90/1 (a change of zoning in the district planning scheme from Industrial A to Industrial B to facilitate the establishment of a meat processing pant) on the grounds th'it: (a) Industrial developments within the proposed zone may generate significant
volumes of traffic particularly heavy vehicles. Direct access for this traffic from SH4 to the proposed site and future subdivisions thereof, would be detrimental to the safety and efficiency of the highway. This objection would be met by amending the proposed change to provide as follows: • (1) access to the proposed zone be from
George Street only, at a point not closer than 50m from the highway intersection; and (2) subdivision of Industrial B land not to be permitted where access is derived directly from SH4. The proposed parking provisions in ordnance 2A (i) (iii) re inadequate for the proposed uses permitted by the proposed change. 'This objection would be met by amending ordnance 2A (i) (iii) to Turnpage 7
Works hui
Frompage3 provide for one parking space per 50m2 of gross floor area or one space per two employees'. The Transit NZ objection was signed by its Wanganui Regional Manager, M.A. Bames. The nature of AFFCO's cross objection - a late submission is not known at this stage.
