Microwave water treatment information incorrect
Microwaving a for three seconds will not sterilise a glass of water, the Bulletin has found. Last week we passed on what we thought was some very useful information about an easy method of drinking water sterilisation to Ohakune people, but we have since been told the information is incorrect. Wanganui Immunologist Dr Sam Chan said heat is ultimately the most effective treatment of all organisms likely to be found in water, and that a microwave oven could be used to sterilise water, as lorig as it is boiled, and in the case of giardia, for three minutes. He said there are several methods of treating water but heat is the most universally effective. The Bulletin apologises to readers for passing on this incorrect information.
