Karioi trees damaged

Die back of a large area of radiata tree needles in the Karioi Forest has the new owners worried. During January and February of this year about 350 hectares of one to five-year-old trees has suffered what Winstone Pulp International, the forest's owners, believe is chemical damage. "Spray drift from neighbouring contorta eradicating operations is suspected as the cause," said forest manager Terry Tapp. He said consultants have been employed to determine the source and the extent of the damage. About 50 per- cent of the growing crowns of the trees have been affected. Mr Tapp said a small number of trees had died and the likely result was at least a loss of growth for the season for the majority of the trees. He said they don't yet know if the quality of the timber will be affected. The Bulletin has been as yet unable to contact the person in charge of the eradication programme Mr Tapp refeired tcr.
