Turoa gift too dear for council

Waimarino's elected representatives looked a gift horse smack in the mouth last week arid decided ratepayers couldn't afford it. The gift was the Turoa Alpine Village golf course and tennis courts, offered to the Ruapehu District Council by Turoa Ski Resort Limited for the princely sum of one dollar. It wasn't the dollar price tag that put the Waimarino Community Board off the idea but council officers' estimates of $40,000 per year in running costs.

'The course and the courts are great facilities and it sounds like a great offer but I can't see that we can put that cost onto our ratepayers," said Board member Ben Goddard at the meeting of the board last Thursday. It was quickly moved by Cr Bill Peach that the offer be declined. Cr Ellen Gould said she would like to see the original agreement between the eompany and the Ohakune Borough Council regarding the facilities and the village. "I think that (setting up the facilities and running them) was their reserves contribution for the subdivision," said Bruce Thompson.
