River weed trees attacked
Wanganui River bank weed trees are under attack from two teams of Department of Conservation staff. A Pipiriki field centre permanent staff member with two 'Restart' Labour Department workers made up one team and a similar group from Taumarunui was the second. The main weeds under attack are budlea and willow which has caused problems when cut down in that the discarded material easily takes root further downstream So staff have been employing a method of drilling the trees' trunks with portable hand-drills and filling the holes with Roundup poison using drenching guns and back-packs. Pipiriki field centre manager Dennis McDonnell said the method is so far working well. Plunket ruri on Sunday Ohakune Plunket's annual fun run is postponed until Sunday 17 March after bad weather stopped the event going ahead last weekend. Plunket organisers say local businesses have been very generous with donations of prizes so they are hoping for a good turnout. Next time the run will go ahead rain, hail or shine, said organisers.
