Meat plant objections withdrawn
Two of the objections to the Raetihi district planning scheme change have been withdrawn. The scheme change is being made to allow the establishment of a meat processing plant in Raetihi. The objectors, who were concerned about possible smell and noise problems, met with the company involved, Pro-Am Ltd based in Feilding, and the mayor Garrick Workman. Mr Workman said the objectors had been satisfied that the plant would be operated under strict control and that noise and smell would not be a problem.
He said the plant would pipe its efflupnt to the Raetihi settling ponds, which would be capable of handling the extra load with some minor modifications, and that this would mean no ponds would be needed on-site. The company is keen to set up either in Ohakune or Raetihi, but Mr Workman said while Ohakune's district planning scheme would allow it, the settling ponds there would not be able to cope and that the company would either have to build its own ponds or spray the effluent onto paddocks, which would be upwind of Ohakune.
