Whio to leave home

Two pairs of blue ducks (whio) will be shifted from the Manganuioteao River to Mt Egmont National Park next month in a first-ever bid to relieve the rare duck species' threatened status. At present the Ruapehu district stream is producing more juveniles than it can cope with and conservation staff hope to establish a new, viable population at Egmont with the surplus. The scheme follows the successful release of six ducks reared in captivity in 1986. Conservation staff will monitor the duck pairs' suitability for transfer using small transmitters fitted to the ducks. The territories left behind are expected to be filled by other pairs of ducks on the river.
