7 digit phone numbers
Waimarino, Waiouru, Nafional Park and Mt Ruapehu telephone numbers will increase to seven digits in 1991, Telecom Central has advised. Waimarino changes on 22 November and National Park and Mt Ruapehu in August. Ohakune and Raetihi numbers will have '38' added, Waiouru's will change to 3876 XXX, and those town's area code will be (06). National Park's numbers will become 8922 XXX and Mt Ruapehu' s 8923 XXX, with the area code (07). Telecom says the changes will mean they can cope with the increased population and provide more circuits, simplify making toll calls and bring New Zealartd's telecommunications into line with other countries.
