Ruapehu mountain rescue fund grows
Search and rescue groups operating in Tongariro National Park have about $8000 to spend on specialist mountain rescue equipment, Whakapapa field centre manager Russell Montgomery said last week. He said the family and friends of Bruno Arlov donated $500 to the Ruapehu Rescue Fund, $5000 was given by George Iwama after his miraculous blizzard survival, and the Army has donated a large sum. A committee of representatives of the groups who work on mountain rescues, including DoC, Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, The Police, Turoa Skifields, Outdoor Pursuits Centre and the Army, will decide on what equipment is bought, said Mr Montgomery. He said items to be considered will be alpine stretchers, ground-to-air radios (for better communication between ground and air searchers), avalanche rescue equipment, and on-site medical equipment including hypothermia treatment equipment.
