Waiouru Desert Fair cancelled

Waiouru's Desert Fair has been cancelled for 1991 due to financial constraints on the Army Training Group. Camp commander Colonel Phil Maguire said last week. Col Maguire said he regretted having to make the decision but with the changes in the way expenditure was accounted for within the Army the high cost of running the event had become "very evident". He said also that due to budget constraints there was not the manpower available to work on the Desert Fair organisation and that staff now had to concentrate on their primary responsibilities. He said cancellation of this year's Desert Fair was not necessarily the end of the event however, and that with a much greater lead time and possibly combining the event with the Around the Mountains Relay, the fair or something similar could be resurrected in future.
