Ruapehu area has glimpse of eclipse
While many people in the Southern Ruapehu missed out on seeing last Wednesday's solar eclipse due to the weather, there were many who managed a glimpse of the phenomenon. There were a few bright patches between cloud during the event which allowed people a good view of the eclipse, many using welding glass and masks, some using the recommended pin-hole camera. As far as the Bulletin is aware there were very few people who managed to get hold of special viewing devices that were available in other places. While this area was predicted to be outside the area for the best view of the annular eclipse it was better than many areas because of the breaks in the cloud. Mid-way through the event the sun was seen as a ring around the moon in front of it, with the sun appearing as a crescent before and after. The eclipse cut out almost 90 per cent of normal sunlight but due to the cloud cover this dimming of the daylight probably appeared to many people to be caused by the weather.
