City sound for local movies
Ohakune's cinema, King's Theatre, now has a sound system to match a city theatre, with the installation of a state-of-the-art system. Proprietor of the theatre Bruce Thompson said they have had the system for some six months but have been waiting on a crucial part that fits to the Zeis Icon projector which picks up the sound track from the film. He said all films will now be presented in full high fidelity stereo surround sound. "Now people will hear the sound in the high quality as intended by the film producers," said Mr Thompson. He said the system, which is based on a Perreux power amplifier and Zeiss Icon sound heads, is capable of handling all formats of film sound recording including Dolby and Ultra Stereo. The theatre is fitted with 11 speakers. "It may take some regular film goers a bit of getting used to," said
Bruce. "We've had some people thinking some of the dialogue was actually other people in the theatre talking." He said they have to experiment with volume control too, but as yet have had no complaints from the neighbours!
