Golf for Maori Battalion Assoc funds

Raising funds for the 28th Maori Battalion Association was the aim behind the recent Waiouru Golf Tournament, which was deemed a success. The total amount collected from the toumament was $2700 which will go some way to to-

wards replacing money which was lost to the Association through a travel agent swindle. A number of the Association's members had arranged to travel overseas to visit graves and World War Two battle sites of the 28th Maori Battalion, but a travel agent absconded with

the money, said tournament organiser Dave Ahuriri. The 18-hole open grand tournament was held at Pearce Park at Waiouru and attracted more than 70 golfers from Waiouru, Taihape, Turangi, Waimarino and various other parts of the North Island.

Prior to teeing off a mihi (welcome) was performed and then a Turangi kaumatua, Mr Rangi Dudley teed off with 'exploding results' (the golf ball given to him was a trick one). Mr Ahuriri said the fund raising effort was high spirited and thanks must be accorded to the

the Waiouru businesses and community for their generous sponsorship. "May God bless you all for your community spirit towards a worthy cause. I thank you," said Mr Ahuriri. The major sponsors were the Oasis Hotel, Waiouru (and Pub Charities) $1000; Waiouru RSA $500; with the rest coming from Waiouru businesses. "A special thanks to you all who assisted me in the fund-raising and at the Waiouru Rongomiroa o nga haure wha Marae, and at the Waiouru Golf Club. And thank you to Mr Peter Pitts," said Mr Ahuriri. He also expressed thanks to the Waiouru Golf Club management committee and to the "nga uri manaaki o nga hau e wha (management committee) of the Marae.
