More Karioi megawatts proposed
If the Karioi Power Projcct gocs ahcad it may be almost six times the size of the earlicr schcmc in power output. This would be due to the addition of a third power station on the Whangaehu River at the end of a 11.5km tunnel which would take water from the Whangaehu as wcll as the upper part of the schcmc. Previously the Whangaehu water was thought to be unusablc because of its high sulphur content. The river drains Ruapehu's Crater Lake. parties has been gcncrally favourable, the King Country Electric Power Board was told at their last 1990 mceting. Board gcncral manager Petcr Till told the board that copies of the consultants recommendations on the scheme had been sent out to interested parties and meetings had been held with Electricorp and the Atihau Incorporation, the affected land owners.
