Tongariro National Park's world status has now been recognised, with its inclusion in the limited list of World Hcritage Parks. This should lead to a lot more overseas visitors coming to the area to sce this wondcr of the world. But will it mean we, the locals, appreciate what we've got any more? It would bc great if wc did. It's easy for evcn those among us who are keen on the park to put off spcnding time in the
park with the classic "there's plenty of time - I'll do it later" attitude. But we should get into the park and enjoy its many world-beating spectacular walks and scenery now. We can enjoy it later too. We can also tell our friends how good it is, and know it to be true, and so help encourage more visitors. Ruapehu is a great placc in winter but it is just one picce of a park that has intcrnational status. Get into your park and enjoy it all year!
