Two Christmases for two Turoa Tumblers
Two Turoa Tumblers gymnasts will have two bites at Christmas dinner this year as they fly out of New Zealand Christmas Day and cross the date line to land in Hawaii on Christmas Day. Shaun McLean of Raetihi and Warwick Hays of Ohakune are taking part in a Sports for Understanding sports and cultural exchange to Hawaii and California, along with 15 girls from around the country. They stay in Hawaii 3-4 days then fly to Los Angeles to stay about three weeks. There they will take trips to the sights, make speeches at high schools and take part in 3-4 gym sessions each week. They will compete at club level gymnastics on their trip. Young gymnasts from Australia, Japan, China, Canada ,USA, andNew Zealand will be part of the exchange. Warwick's mother said the pair's fundraising has been going very well, especially in Raetihi were helpers have been running various events. She said they are holding another ba-tons-up day in Raetihi on 4 December. A pig in a barrow raffle is planned with tickets on sale at the Turoa Tumblers display next Sunday. The raffle will be drawn at the Ohakune Christmas market day. "The boys have worked really hard to get there," said Mrs Hays. "They've been mowing lawns and baby sitting and have been training all the time too." She said the pair will be training right up to when they leave on Christmas Day.
