Pulp machine switched on

$1.3 million worth of heat exchanger equipment was commissioned at the Karioi Pulp Mill last week. The unit takes steam from the mill's refiners and uses it to pre-heat the air used for drying pulp. The pre-heated air, at 60 degrees, is then heated in an oil fired unit. Mill Manager Dave Anderson said the unit would pay for itself in at least 18 months in savings in oil usage in the oil-fired drying unit. He said if oil prices stay high or continue to rise

the unit would pay for itself even sooner. The unit was imported from Norway and installed by Ruapehu Engineering of Ohakune. Mr Anderson said it was the last project for the year, out of a capital expenditure budget of $3

million. This follows last year's budget of $6m. Mr Anderson said it was the biggest single item for the year. Next year about $2m will be spent on process modification to improve pulp quality.
