Raetihi flower show "best"

Tom and Locheen Punch scooped the pool of trophies in the Waimarino Spring Show, which was described by the judges as the best they'd seen. The Punches took the Jennifer Godfrey Cup for Champion Bloom, the Ashwell Cup for Aggregate Narcissi, the Tizard Cup for Cut Flowers and Shrubs and the Points Prize Cup for aggregate points over the cut flower section. The mild spring, without the "27 frosts in a row" have led to a much better standard in this year's show, said Raetihi Garden Club president Locheen Punch. The Raetihi Garden Club organised the show, held at the Waimarino Club Rooms

in Seddon Street Raetihi. Wanganui Horticultural Society members Una Hawkin, Margaret Brewer and Ken Parnell judged the show. Mrs Brewer, who is a regular Waimarino Spring Show judge, said the quality and standard of flowers was terrific. "The best I've seen," she said. "There are many nice strong blooms of good size a colour." Mrs Hawkin agreed, saying the standard of colour and growth were extremely good, with the blooms much better than at other shows she has been judging. Dummy coach and handler Wayne Gunnell makes some minor adjustments to the Powderkeg dummy in the first ever Ruapehu Dummy Downhill at Turoa on Saturday. The Powderkeg "waiter" won a prize for the best looking dummy (!?). The Ski Shed's masterpiece took the prize for traveiiing the farthest distance (and nearly cleaned out the judges!) with the Ragtime Maintenance entry taking runner up prize, the Junction Ski Shop's Wanda the Weka showed the most spectacular wipe out, the Turoa Ticket Office entry won the prize for the most innovative (a dummy skiing and sitting on a dunny), R&R sports shop from Hamilton took a prize for the ugiiest dummy, and a prize for perseverance was awarded to a young lad from Wellington who made it to the competition despite having to ditch the torso of his dummy because it wouldn't fit in the car! Last but not least the Ruapehu Bulletin's Dummy "Jock" took the prize for the wobbliest run.
