Skiing accidents cost $1.5m

Skiing tops the mountain recreation accidents list in numbers and in dollars spent by the Accident Compensation Corporation. Figures recently published in the Federated Mountain Clubs Bulletin show there were 777 skiing accidents in the 1989-90 financial year in New Zealand and $1.5 million in ACC claims. One of the accidents was fatal. There were two tramping deaths and 178 non-fatal accidents, one hunting death and 106 non-fatal accidents, two mountaineering deaths and 40 non-fatal accidents. The skiing ACC claims beat the others combined by three times. However all mountain accidents combined pale into insignificance, says the FMC Bulletin, alongside rugby's 7466 accidents and the 26 swimming and 17 fishing deaths.
