Rates action committee meeting in Raetihi tonight

A meeting is to be held tonight to form a rates action committee, in response to the Ruapehu District Council's rates system proposals. The local branch of Federated Farmers is organising the meeting and the group has its own ideas on what sort of action should be taken. But they would like to see other people and not just farmers involved, said a federation representative. He said his group believes there is a degree of incompetence in the council management and that they would like to see more accountability with rates spending. They would like to see a true differential rating system installed. He said the 12-month limit to the differential rating system for the Waimarino rural ratepayers was "a cynical ploy to prevent a rates revolt". The meeting is open to all Waimarino rural ratepayers and is being held at the Waimarino Club in Raetihi at 7.30pm tonight.
