70th jubilee for Raetihi tennis

Ruapehu District Mayor Garrick Workman explains the options for solving Taumarunui's sewage problems, which affects all Wanganui River users.

• The Raetihi Tennis Club proposes to celebrate its 70th Jubilee at Labour Weekend, commencing with a get-to-gether at the courts on opening day, Saturday 20 October, an informal dinner and social in the evening and a fun day of tennis on Sunday 21 October. We are looking forward to having as many past members and their families as possible to come home to Raetihi and help us celebrate. As so many names and addresses are unknown to the present committee we ask that this information be passed on to anyone who was connected with the club and that they contact

myself giving names and numbers attending. Numbers are required for catering purposes. Please phone Faith Wise, Secretary, (0658) 54270 evenings of (0658) 58704 during working hours. Address - 29 Ballance Street, Raetihi. Faith Wise Sign praise • Congratulations to the Junction business community on the great sign welcoming people to the Junction. Its brightness at night epitomises the wonderful atmosphere of the Junction during the winter season. On a more mundane note it is also of great help when giving direc-

in those meetings are: The District Council, Regional Council, Department of conservation, Iwi Transition Agency, Forest and Bird Society, canoe Association, Friends of the

Wanganui River and adjacent landowners. The objective of the meetings has been to describe preliminary investigations that have been carried out so far and to identify specific concerns of the parties involved. To date a total of 15 alternative disposal methods have been discussed involving different sites, however this number has been reduced to five, on three possible sites. A further meeting of

the parties is planned later this month. It is intended that from this meeting a decision will emerge as to the options that will be presented to a public meeting planned to be held on Thursday 4 October at 7.30pm at the Taumarunui Cosmopolitan Club.

It is Council's intention to consult with ratepayers and residents on this very important issue, given the high capital cost involved in implementing an upgraded disposal system. Further, there is the need to satisfy as many individual and public concerns as possible in terms of the use of the Wanganui River, Maori spiritual values and odour problems before proceeding.
