Record Ruapehu crowds

Turoa Skifields had an all-time record crowd on Saturday, with a carcount estimate of 5100 people visiting the slopes. Sunday was a little less busy with about 4100 people, said assistant mountain manager Rob Finlayson. On both days at Turoa the weather conditions were good in the morning with visibility becoming variable in the afternoon. Whakapapa's Saturday was one of the busiest days this year with between 6500 and 7000 people enjoying clear blue skies and good skiing, and on Sunday 5500-6000 people took to the slopes. Sunday's visibility was poor, however. All facilities were operating all weekend at Whakapapa and the field had 6cm of new snow on Sunday night. Events held on Turoa on the weekend included the New Zealand Speed Skiing Championships, with Nick Ridings from the Powderhorn Teaching the top speed of 137kph. Poor visibility in the afternoons cut the event short. Organisers hope to hold another event in two weeks time. The New Zealand Women's Volleyball team held a demonstration beach volleyball game on Saturday and the inaugural Dummy Downhill was held on Saturday afternoon.
