Climber gives to rescuers

Ruapehu Blizzard survivor Jo Ji (George) Iwama presented Wanganui Search and Rescue Squad leader Sergeant Darryl Nix with a cheque for $5177.80, which was the proceeds for his thank-you party held at his boss's Auckland Daikoku Restaurant. Staff worked free for one day and management provided the food to raise the money as a gesture of thanks for the work put in by rescuers in trying to find Mr Iwama. The climber's experience of surviving for six days in a snow cave in fierce Ruapehu blizzard conditions has not put him off mountaineering - he is to take part in a climbing course later this month.
