Skifield groomer drivers to learn S&R routes

Ruapehu snow groomer drivers are to become familiar with the route to the Crater Rim and its terrain as part of preparation for future scarch and rescue missions on the mountain. Ruapehu Alpine Lifts drivers, with the help of Department of Conservation staff started the familiarisayon scheme with a trip to the crater this week, said Whakapapa Field Centre manager Russell Montgomery. He said the idea of the exercise was to improve the search and rescue capability within the park of the snow cats on both Whakapapa and Turoa. In the recent search and rescue mission for the lost soldiers, the snow cats proved to be of limited use because the drivers couldn't navigate in the appalling conditions combined with their lack of knowledge of the terrain. Mr Montgomery said until now the drivers have not been able to become familiar with the terrain driving a cat Turnpage 8
