Civil defence role for board members

The Waimarino Community Board is to take an active role in civil defence for the Ruapehu region. Community Board members heard that their participation is being sought, with the goal of placing the southern Ruapehu region in a "stand alone" situation should a civil defence emergency arise. Board chairman Colin Webb is the Waimarino's Area Coordinator, with other board members on the civil defence committee. Councillors were en-

couraged to take on positions as radio operators, welfare officers and area sector managers, both in Raetihi and Ohakune. Chairman Colin Webb declared it a "jolly shame" that the expertise of former civil defence co-ordinator Don Robinson was not available to council. The board extended an invitation to current civil defence officer, Karen Ngatai, to attend next month's meeting, in order to meet board members and discuss the board's role in local civil defence.
