Highway intersection needs change, says mayor
The only way progress will be made to improve one of Ohakune's worst corners is if a few more accidents occur, according to Waimarino Mayor, Garrick Workman. He told Waimarino Community Board members that the former council had approached Transit New Zealand to alleviate the problem but had been informed there was no funding available for the job. TNZ has even less funding available this year due to further cut-backs, he said. Mr Workman said 'Parklands Corner' at the intersection of SH49 and Ayr Street has been the site of many "close shaves" - the worst instances being with cars turning into Ayr Street from the left hand side of the main road. "There is absolutely no vision," he said. "It's a wonder there's been no monstrous smash-up." Mr Workman maintained however, that the job was cost benefit factor related. "The only way it will get done is create a few more accidents," he said.
