Umpire criticism unfair

The netball game between Raetihi 1 and Waiouru 1 on Saturday proved very exciting for both players and spectators with very tight defence marking by both teams and the shooters scoring some excellent goals. With Raetihi 1 going into this game unbeaten both their defence and

attack' worked hard to end the game at 20 all. Some lovely intercepts and hard defence work by the Waiouru goal defence were seen. Netball umpires take a lot of criticism from players and spectators alike and the Netball Division have tried to help by arranging for two Wanganui Umpires to come up on a Saturday to help them improve. But as usual there was a lack of support, with only four people turning up out of approximately 100 players to sit umpire exams. Yet still there are people on the sideline and especially players complaining about how their games are umpired. The ladies doing these umpiring duties at least have the courage to get out there with a whistle and do their best. Players are reminded that without these people there wouldn't be any netball and asked to accept their decisions and don't be so critical and make the best of what you have. Results: 7 July 1990.
