Auditorium plans restart

From page 1 staff were delighted with the decision and that it was crucial to the centre to have an adequate auditorium. The start of the Department of Conservation's successful Summer Nature Programme is the target date for completion of the 120-seat auditorium building. It will incorporate a large multi-image audio visual show and will provide a venue for lectures and presentations. There are also plans to install a ski history display. The Whakapapa Visitor Centre is the country's busiest with more than 150,000. people using it. The centre is sited in the most visited

New Zealand national park, Tongariro. It is open 364 days a year and offers people orientation to the park, human and natural history information about the park and visitor information. The aim for DoC is to increase understanding and appreciation of Tongariro and its protected natural areas.

At present staff handle more than 200 school group visits with about 120 asking for talks from park staff, without a suitable venue. The Summer Nature Programme evening talks draw about 60 people per night and the department has had to rely on local hotel proprietors' generosity in providing sites.
