A new deal for hunters and anglers
The way fresh water fisheries and game are managed is changing, with a transitional council formed recently. The changes follow the Conservation Law Reform Bill which amends the laws relating to conservation organisations, fresh water fish and game, conservation management, planning and marginal strips. The former 22 acclimatisation societies and two wildlife conservancies (one Central North Island and one Southern
Lakes) have been arnalgamated to form 12 Fish and Game councils, with the Taupo fishery being administered and managed by the Department of Conservation. Each of the 12 districts are managed by 12 people appointed by the Minister of Conservation for a transitional period until 4 May 1991. The Waimarino is covered by the Taranaki Fish and Game Council, with the area represented by Dianne Pritt, Harry Brown and Jim Gosman. The council met for the
first time on 27 June in Wanganui. One of the first tasks of the transitional council is to prepare a ro 11 of anglers and hunters who purchase adult whole season licences. These people will be able to vote for their representatives on the council for the next three years. People who buy a whole season licence up to 28 February can indicate on the licence whether they wish to be on the roll. A postal ballot is to be concluded by 4 Mav 1991.
