Young people's forum formed

The first junior council for Raetihi, Ohakune or Waiouru was formed last Wednesday, with nine Ruapehu College members and eight primary school members.

Ruapehu Mayor Garrick Workman, with the help of deputy mayor Weston Kirton, helped the council through their first agenda, which saw the 17 councillors swom in and a chairman and deputy elected. Chairman is college

pupil Che Wilson and deputy is Raetihi Primary School pupil Paul Kallaghan. The aims of the council are to give young people a voice to the Ruapehu District Council on matters that they Turn page 2

Mayor Workman said it was good to see Waiouru, Rangataua and Orautoha schools represented on the council along with Ohakune, Raetihi primary schools. Depiity Mayor Weston Kirton said three words summed up what the junior council would be

about. Responsibility in bringing forward ideas and concerns, work to meet the challenge to contribute something to the community, doing things that are sometimes difficult, and fun. He said he was sure the councillors would be able to say they enjoyed their time on council at the end of it if they have set up some worthwhile projects and learned something along the way. Mayor Workman called for the support of parents and teachers to make the junior council work. (For example, he asked a councillor's mum that was present if a family timetable could

be altered to fit with the meeting schedule of the council!) Waiouru Primary School principal Tauri Morgan said wisdom, justice and love would help the councillors in their work. The council is Paul Kallaghan (Raetihi), Laurissa Sommerville (Raetihi), Scott Mazey (Ohakune), Kaye Murdie (Ohakune), Ben Law (Ruapehu College), Phillip Hawken (RC), James Allen (RC), Susan Frame (RC), Adrian Fetzer (RC), Blair Cornwall (RC), Che Wilson (RC),

Asharie Perera (RC), Andrea Barnes (RC), Melanie Hill (Waiouru), Chevell Martin

(Waiouru), Sally Williams (Orautoha) and Aleysha Pearson (Rangataua).
