Snow shows show promise

The snow has fallen early and is still falling, but will the skiers come in good numbers? This year's snow shows would seem to indicate they will. Reports of good attendances and lots of interest from visitors have come in from the shows at Auckland, Wellington and Palmerston North and Rotorua and that was before the recent heavy snowfalls.

Turoa marketing manager Nancy Van der Laan said the reaction to Turoa dropping their prices has understandably been fantastic. She said people have also congratulated Turoa and Whakapapa on their combined fiveday pass, designed to increase visitors to the Ruapehu region as a whole. Wellington's snow show, this year held in the Overseas Terminal, was popular despite the

poor state of the building. Easter was also a good indicator with many accommodation houses booked out on the weekend, and some ski shops doing a brisk trade. Turnpage2

He said there have been a larger number of westerly and southwesterly airflows over the central North Island so far this year. All this added to last week's snowfalls, which were publicised on the front page of the New Zealand Herald, are promise of a good winter season, if not for farmers, at least tourist operators. '
