Heliski petition
A group of Ohakune people has launched a petition to apply political pressure to have Mt Ruapehu opened up for heliskiing. The organisers are members of the Ruapehu South Business Association. Spokesman Paul Scarf, owner of the Powderhorn Ski shop and Powderkeg Inn which is opening this winter, says the problem is with restrictions applying to the Tongariro National Park. "We simply believe this region can prosper if heliskiing is allowed and we do not believe helicopters will impose any noise nuisance or visual pollution," he says. The organisers intend to seek the support of their local Member of Parliament, Mr Jim Bolger, in presenting the petition to Parliament and in representing their position. The petition was launched at the end of last winter and will remain open until the end of the current winter. Mr Scarf encourages all skiers to sign the petition coupon sponsored by his company and to return it to him as soon as possible. He would also appreciate any indication or expression of support for the continued ban on heliskiing so that he can accurately measure the consensus among skiers.
