National Park ratepayers balk at 2000% increase
A group of National Park ratepayers have organised a public meeting to air their views on what they feel is a rates crisis. Organiser Marshall Gebe said National Park ratepayers have been lumbered with a 2000 per cent rates increase over the past four years and most are unable to pay. He said thanks to past poor ski seasons and a dried up summer tourist trade there was no money in the town to pay the rates. Most of the rates increase is due to the town's water and sewerage schemes installation costs. They will meet at the National Park hall at 2pm this Saturday, with mayor Carrick Workman and council finance director Chris Ryan in attendance.
