On-mountain fun

Whakapapa continues their tradition of onmountain fun events with a host of activities designed to appeal to the whole family. As well as the usual ski racing there will be clowns, buskers and magicians to entertain during the busy periods, apres ski parties, fancy dress, fun days, a guided walk to the Crater Lake, a Masters handicap race and a corporate ski challenge. The highlight of the fun events will happen on 26 August with the Coca Cola fireworks display in the snow at the top of the Bruce Road.

Over the last four years Ruapehu Alpine Lifts has spent $12 million building new lifts, developing ancillary facilities and purchasing those businesses on the skifield it did not already own. It comes as no surprise then that the summer of 89-90 was one of consolidation with no major capital works being undertaken. However, it has been a very busy summer for RAL staff. In addition to their regular maintenance programme RAL opened up their lifts for the summer holidays to give sightseers and trampers easier access

to the upper alpine region and for the keen there were guided walks to the Crater. Heavy snowfalls down to the Top of the Bruce have already occurred this year. 1990 has all the makings of an excellent ski season, say staff.
