Top support for Ohakune singing meet
Sir Edmund Hillary has agreed to be an official supporter of the Labour Weekend "Sing Aotearoa, Ohakune Odyssey choral singers' festival. As a sponsor, he will attend the event. Another sponsor is Dame Kiri Te Kanawa who has pledged to offer her support for the festival, though she will be unable to attend. A local committee has been formed t^ do some of the necessary organising, while an Auckland committee of the Choral Federation and the 1990 Commission are working on nation-wide
aspects of the organisation. Chairperson Sue Allomes said there was solid support from some Raetihi people on the committee and that the Arcadian singers have lent their support. The committee is investigating venues for the various festival activities including some in Raetihi. The Royal Theatre in Raetihi is to be one venue, said Mrs Allomes. Raetihi accommodation for visitors is also being sought and the transport for festival visitors while in the area is being organised by Raetihi bus company Dempsey's.
