Pig worry
The release of pigs into favoured hunting territories is worrying the Animal Health Board.
Board Chairman Richard Alspach, says there are indications that pigs are being taken fronTdiseased (TB endemic) areas into non-diseased regions to replenish depleted pig numbers for hunters. "I am sure the practice is well intentioned, but the risk of the spread of TB because of this could pose a serious threat," he said. "With millions of dollars being spent on TB eradication, it is only natural that we view the situation with concern and dismay." Mr Alspach said the farmers' cause is not being advanced by the practice and he felt it necessary to warn people involved that the release of feral pigs in this manner was an offence under the Wild Animals Control Act. "The Animal Health Board has asked the Department of Conservation to prosecute anyone caught releasing pigs for hunting purposes."
