NZ's OLDEST BALLOON floats by

Rangataua residents were curious to find out what the roar was all about last Tuesday and found it was the burners for a 20-year-old balloon being inflated in the school grounds. Balloonist Peter King was visiting friends and, upon finding the weather conditions ideal for hot air ballooning, was itching to get aloft.

He and a friend managed a take off during dusk, and made a short flight in the "Bernina" balloon across Waimarino fields to land between Soldiers Road and the Tongariro National Park boundary. Peter said the landing was heavy, but that, as balloonists say, a heavy landing is better than no landing!

He said they had fuel enough to fly to National Park but that the light was failing fast. He said he would love to try more flights in this area, including one between the mountains, or possibly up and over Ruapehu.
