EXTRA VOLCANO SURVEY
Increased activity at the Ruapehu Crater Lake does not indicate axiything is happening deeper in the mountain, Department of Conservation staff believe. That is despite the more profuse activity of the lake recently. Activity in the lake has reached a level of frequency that was last seen in 1982, and the temperature was measured at 46°C last Thursday. DoC staff and Department of Scientific and Industrial Research staff climbed Ruapehu last Thursday to investigate the mountain's increased activity. Peter Otway, DSIR surveyor based at Wairaki, and Ian Nairn from Rotorua made the trip which was an extra to the department's monitoring programme which sees surveys made each month. The group took measurements to detect distortion of the lake and temperature readings. A TVNZ camera crew accompanied the party. At the time the Bulletin went to press people were still being warned not to go near the crater lake, though Mangaturuturu Saddles and the Dome area were considered safe. (Check with DoC for present conditions).
