RAFTS BACK ON RIVER, DUCK BREEDING ENDED

The three month pact between the Department of Conservation and commercial rafters to keep rafting off the middle section of the Manganuiateao River finished last Friday. Raetihi conservation officer John Heaphy said the pact, which is designed to give breeding whio (blue duck) peace and quiet, has worked very well. This year's pact is the second, with the idea having been tried successfully last year. The Manganuiateao hosts the largest whio I population in the North Island.
