POLICE HARASSMENT INQUIRY TO PROCEED
A court case which may have a bearing on a complaint of harassment brought against Waimairno police was heard in Wanganui last week. The Judge hearing the case, which involved three defendants and seven charges, called two stenographers to record his decision. In October the Wellington Maori Legal Service lodged a complaint with the Police Complaints Authority, saying it had evidence indicating Waimarino police were carrying out a policy of racial harassment and police •intimidation. The Police Complaints Authority Sir Peter Quilliam has said the inquiry would take some time to complete and that the findings wouldn't be made public, except under special circumstances. In the case a Raetihi man was found guilty of assault on a police constable and another Raetihi man was found guilty of failing to accompany a police officer. Five other charges against the two men and one other man, all brothers, were dismissed.
