OHAKUNE FIRST FOR TOMORROW'S SCHOOLS
Ohakune School's Board of Trustees were one of the first in the country to go through the process of appointing a principal recently. Board Chairman Brian Wilson said they found the process very different to what they are used to, none of the board members having been involved in a staff appointment at that level. He said they received enquiries from Ashburton to Kaikohe, with five firm applications from which two were short-listed. Mr Wilson said there were no guidelines given by the new Ministry of Education and that the board put together its own procedure fro handling the appointment He said the board is happy with the process now it is complete but that it was worrying at the time. He said they found out the strengths of different board members, which has meant they have come together as a stronger unit. The high calibre of the applicants was a surprise and the decision was in no way an easy one, said Mr Wilson. Now the board is looking to the appointment of the school's deputy principal.
