Mts runners battle the heat

More than 180 teams gathered together in various stages to test their stamina in the 160 kilometre Around the Mountain relay on Saturday. At approximately four o'clock Friday evening the first of the 14 ultra runners (aiming

to run the full 100 miles) left Waiouru Military Camp. The last of the ultra runners left at approximately three o'clock Saturday morning. Following were a team of 4 running 25 miles each, two teams of 2 by 50 miles each and 180 teams of 10 x 10 miles each consist-

ing of youth grade, women, veterans, composite and mens open. Conditions for the race were excellent once again, though very hot at times. Early morning fog at dawn opened up into clear blue skies

with plenty of sunshine and gentle breezes for some. Sunbathers, cyclists and supporters with team "Get ups", logos and even competitors pets all went into making the 13 th Round the

Mountain Relay even more enjoyable than the last. By approximately 6.45pm the time clock stopped ticking, at just over 16 hours for the 10 x 10 teams. Turnpage2
