QUEEN'S CHAIN ACCESS RIGHTS THREATENED

A fight is on to retain access rights to the Queen's Chain. The Conservation Law Reform Bill which is now before a parliamentary select committee, would repeal the provision for public access to the strip of land next to rivers, lakes and the sea. Management of the marginal land would be handed to adjacent landowners. The Public Lands Coalition, made up of acclimatization societies, Federated Mountain Clubs and Forest and Bird, are urging people to write to the Prime Minister to see that the Bill is redrafted to ensure continued public access to the Queen's Chain (marginal strips).
