Late rate date
Mercy was called for from the Waimarino District Council over late rate penalty payments at their final meeting, and again they turned down the requesL The council was asked to waive the penalty for two rural ratepayers who missed the first instalment. The
amounts concerned were $76.43 and $46.77. The ratepayers claimed they did not receive the rate demand and did not see the newspaper advertisements concerning due dates. The council accepted the district manager's recommendation to turn down the request on the
grounds that doing so would create an "unfortunate precedent". District Manager John Murrihy said there was no eviderice to show the rate demands were not sent and that the second rate demands did reach the ratepayers. Cr John Compton asked if it were possible a mistake had been made, given that there had been some computer errors in the charging of rates. Mr Murrihy said that was why advertisements were placed, and that there had been a number of these published.
