Treaty for Waimarino

Plans for Waimarino's Waitangi Day celebrations are slowly coming together, with the local 1990 committee looking for a suitable site. At the last meeting of the committee options were considered and a decision made to approach the people concerned.

The idea is to hold a "Waimarino Unity Day", where people from around the Waimarino will meet at a site some where between Raetihi and Ohakune for a "treaty" signing ceremony plus various fun activities. At this stage ideas for the day include school

sports events, a re-en-actment of an armed constabulary meeting on horse back, top town style events and community group fund raising events such as barbecues and sausage sizzles. Some committee

members suggested representatives of families sign the treaty while others suggested everybody, including children, should sign it if they wish. The next meeting of the committee is on Monday 13 November.
